Habit Stacking

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself during the postpartum season is to “habit stack.”

Instead of trying to remember a dozen new things, simply attach one small habit to something you’re already doing every day. Those little moments add up, and before long, you’re building confidence without even realizing it.

Here are a few of my favorite postpartum habit stacks:

Every time you feed your baby…

  • Drink a full glass of water.

  • Take five slow, deep breaths.

  • Relax your shoulders and unclench your jaw.

  • Ask yourself, “What do I need right now?”

Every diaper change…

  • Take a moment to notice baby’s color, alertness, and muscle tone.

  • Offer a few moments of eye contact and conversation. Your voice is one of your baby’s favorite sounds.

After each feeding…

  • Burp your baby.

  • Hold them upright for 10–20 minutes if reflux or spit-up is a concern.

  • Take a quick stretch before sitting back down.

When baby falls asleep…

  • Resist the urge to immediately clean something.

  • Eat a snack before you tackle a chore.

  • Rest if your body is asking for it.

Every time you use the restroom…

  • Empty your bladder completely.

  • Refill your water bottle.

  • Check in with your bleeding, incision, or perineal healing.

  • Wash your hands, then apply nipple cream if you’re breastfeeding and it’s part of your routine.

Every morning…

  • Open the blinds.

  • Step outside for a few minutes of fresh air if you’re able.

  • Let natural light help reset your body’s circadian rhythm.

Every evening…

  • Set out tomorrow’s clothes for yourself and baby.

  • Refill your bedside water.

  • Restock diapers, wipes, burp cloths, and snacks at your feeding station.

Every time you pump…

  • Have your water and snack ready before you begin.

  • Practice hands-on pumping if recommended.

  • Wash pump parts immediately afterward or place them in the refrigerator if following current storage guidance.

Every time you sit down to feed your baby…

  • Place your phone out of reach for the first five minutes.

  • Watch your baby’s cues before looking at a screen.

When your partner gets home from work…

  • Share one thing that went well today before talking about the hard parts.

  • Ask for one specific task instead of saying, “I need help.”

For partners:

Every time you pick up your baby…

  • Do a quick diaper check.

  • Talk, sing, or narrate what you’re doing. Your baby is learning your voice, too.

Every evening before bed…

  • Wash bottles or pump parts.

  • Restock the diaper caddy.

  • Ask your partner, “What’s one thing I can take off your plate tomorrow?”

Before every overnight feeding…

  • Refill mom’s water.

  • Bring her a small snack if she’s hungry.

  • Handle the diaper change whenever possible so she can focus on feeding.

Confidence isn’t built from doing everything perfectly. It’s built through hundreds of small, ordinary moments repeated with love and intention. Those tiny habits become routines, those routines become competence, and before you know it, you’ll realize you’ve become the parent your baby has needed all along and the parent you’ve longed to be. You’ve got this!
